Rev. Milton Brunson & Thompson Community Singers

A Tribute To Rev. Milton Brunson & The Thompson Community Singers

Rev. Milton Brunson & The Thompson Community Singers were one of the most well-loved and skilful choirs in the history of gospel music. They became one of the most celebrated gospel choirs of all time and were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. To many Rev. Milton Brunson & The Thompson Community Singers did not sing... they ministered!

The late Reverend Milton Brunson organised a mass gospel choir in 1948 at Chicago's McKinley High School. This choir was called the 'Thompson Community Singers' or 'The Tommies' after the late Rev. Eugene Thompson of St. Stephen's Church. The Rev Milton Brunson's vision was to expand the scope of choir innovation while at the same time adhering to traditional sound of the mass gospel choir. The choir grew from an ensemble of 48 to more than 200 voices and became the United States' longest running mass gospel choir. They had success in 1963 with the single 'Witness / Rise Up And Walk' and in 1964 'Here Is One / Soldier In God's Army' on the VeeJay Gospel label.

They later moved base to Austin in Chicago's West Side. The Tommies have had five number one albums in the gospel charts and in 1995 won a Grammy award. They backed Shirley Caesar, the 'Queen of Gospel Music', on several projects. Milton Brunson also founded the Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, organised other choirs, played as a bass soloist, directed a thousand voices chorus, worked with Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. and assisted schools in crisis. The late Jessy Dixon also lead the Thompson Community Singers until he founded The Chicago Community Choir. Then in 1997 Milton's wife, Joanne Brunson, took over the choir after the Rev. Milton Brunson passed into glory just after the release of their album 'He's Still Good'. Joanne Brunson invited a young assistant pastor Smokie Norful, now a very popular gospel singer, to sing on the Tommies' 2000 album 'Real'.

The choir was later lead by musical director Percy Bady, who is now known as a prolific musician, song-writer, producer, singer and arranger. Percy Brady has worked with notable gospel artists like: Donnie McClurkin; Yolanda Adams; Dorinda Clark-Cole; BeBe & CeCe Winans; and Marvin Sapp. Kim McFarland-Anderson, Leanne Faine, Ricky Dillard and the late Ethel Holloway are examples of several Tommies singers who became successful gospel artists in their own right.

Last Year's Concert
Last year's United Voices & Friends Sing Richard Smallwood Charity Gospel Concert was a memorable event. Not only was money raised for the local Little Heroes charity (supporting children undergoing treatment for cancer), everyone there enjoyed anointed, joyful and powerful gospel music, some local businesses and ministries given visibility through sponsorship, but also we received reports of lives been restored, envisioned and filled with hope. A truly successful night for all who attended: on or off the stage. To read more and view photos from the concert and rehearsals see Last Year's Concert page and Photo Gallery.
